Kelly Spaans: Leading the Adventure at The Cardrona Horse Treks and 4×4 ATVs

Kelly Spaans is the heart and soul behind The Cardrona Horse Treks and 4×4 ATVs, where she blends her love for horses and outdoor adventures. From her start as a horse trekking guide to running her own business off the beaten track in Cardrona Valley, Kelly’s passion for the land shines through in everything she does.

1. If you could only choose one: horse trekking, quad biking, or riding ATVs, which would it be and why?

Ah that’s easy – Horses hands down! They’re my babies 😉 However we go much higher up the mountain on the quads & off-road buggies, therefore the views are even more impressive, so I often think “how nice it would be to be on a horse up here..” they’re both very cool activities!

2. What inspired you to create your business? And why Cardrona?

I was already working full time as a horse trekking guide in the local area, so it was a natural progression as I was already very intimately connected with the land on the farm I now run my business on (riding my horse, running, mountain biking & quad biking for fun almost every day).

3. Do you have a story from your early life that hinted you might end up working with horses and outdoor activities?

My sister & I were very “horse-mad” as young girls, but we lived in the city so we were not allowed a pony of our own. Our parents bought us motorbikes instead, I guess hoping that would stop the pestering for horses & horse riding – the good thing is now I can ride both! Thanks Mum & Dad!

When I was about 15 my Aunty started up a horse trekking business on their farm in Waitarere Beach & I used to go up & help her out preparing the horses & being her “tail end charlie” on weekends & school holidays, now the tables have turned & she doesn’t have horses anymore, so it’s quite neat to take her out on my treks when she is visiting the area.

4. What are your hobbies outside of your business activities?

I’m a keen runner & mountain biker, I generally love being outdoors & keeping fit so doing what I do for a job suits me down to the ground! In the winter I try to dust my snowboard off & in the summer it’s great to get out with my partner on our Harley Davidsons – if I can manage to ride a horse as well as my snowboard/ Harley in the same day that’s a pretty wicked feeling 😉

5. What is the most unique feedback you have ever had?

There have been many occasions whether verbally or online I have received accolades to the effect of; “This was the honestly best ride I have ever done”, & frequently “This was hands down the highlight of our Queenstown/Wanaka holiday” It is very touching to hear such positive feedback & I love that my clients expectations are often exceeded.

6. If you were to add a completely new, somewhat unconventional activity to Cardrona, what would it be?

Hmmm I’ve ridden Camels & Elephants in other countries… Not sure they would like Cardrona very much though haha

7. How do you hope your work impacts your clients and the community?

As I mentioned above, I hope that my clients expectations are exceeded & that those that were perhaps new to the activity or worried/ nervous can come away with a sense of accomplishment. We have a lovely community here in Cardrona Valley where we all look out for each other & support the local businesses so I feel privileged to be a part of that & make sure my neighbours come & experience what I have to offer.

8. What legacy do you wish to create through your business?

Cherishing & respect of this special land & its history that we are so privileged to be able to enjoy

9. What are some important lessons you’ve learned about life and business throughout your journey?

Where do I start? I had never owned a business before this one, in fact I had never really properly owned horses of my own! & I continue to learn from them – they are amazing creatures! I say to my new staff as I am training them “learn from my mistakes” as I made many in the early years! It’s a pretty well-oiled machine now though.

10. Did you ever imagine the bra fence would be as popular as it is?

Haha nobody did! As I’m typing this I can see many vehicles parked beside it & people taking photos & making cash donations which I bank for NZBCF, plus I can see emails coming through with donations coming via the QR code to the “Bradrona” fundraising page almost $170,000 so far & counting! I’ve been interviewed by various media sources more times than I can remember now & pleased to be able to assist with supporting such a worthy cause.

Kelly has turned her love for adventure into more than just a business—she’s built a community and created lasting memories in Cardrona Valley. Through exciting experiences and a genuine love for the outdoors, she continues to inspire and impress everyone who comes her way.

Maxwell Burns, Travel Agent at Champion Travel in Napier, Excels in the World of Travel

Champion Travels founder Maxwell Burns knows a thing or two about travel. In fact, you would be hard pressed to find a travel agent so dedicated to his profession.

Maxwell started selling travel in Perth in 1976 at API TRAVEL.

“By 1977, I had achieved an IATA Ticketing Qualification in Perth, without which you cannot sell travel as a travel consultant. By 1988, I had created my own business in Auckland”.

Before entering the travel sector however, Maxwell Burns was a journalist. He believes in excellence and integrity – doing the right thing by people. Always.

Maxwell attributes playing first-grade cricket in Australia to his success in the travel industry.

“Cricket is a real discipline. It teaches you to do things right, be competitive and never underestimate people”.

Champion Travel is a globally recognised IATA accredited travel agency, and also offers a unique travel referral franchise system through The Table Top Travellers Club.

Specialising in business travel both domestically and internationally, Maxwell Burns at Champion Travel is committed to providing a personalised world class service to clients around the world.

“My strength is creating airfares for clients that no one else can do. It is security for them. People spend a lot of money with me.

“My forte is as a business travel specialist. I pride myself in doing a lot behind the scenes for my clients”.

If Covid-19 has taught us anything, it is how to be innovative and embrace technology and change.

“The world has become so ‘PC’ now. I embrace the digital technology availability – travel is the most perishable product in the world.

“People want choice. Everybody is unique, and it is my job to find out what people’s needs are”.

Maxwell Burns credits many of the values he has learnt along his journey to his father, especially client referrals.

“I learnt to get things right the first time, and it is only within the last few years that I have understood the importance of referrals.

“My role as a travel agent has become more essential. There is a definite need for face-to-face connections. My strongest trait is I will never walk away from a problem and take complete ownership in my role as a travel agent.

“I am accountable to IATA – if I do a great job, people will come back”.

A unique selling point is the “Book Now, Pay Later” incentive that Maxwell Burns from Champion Travels offers his clients.

“However, it is important to note that “Book Now, Pay Later” is not applicable on every airfare as some airfares have certain terms and conditions that apply”, says Maxwell.

So, what’s in it for you as a client looking at booking an airfare with Maxwell Burns at Champion Travel in Napier?

  • You are booking with a travel agent who has over forty-eight years of experience in the travel sector
  • You are guaranteed top-notch service every time
  • You are provided with up-to-date information
  • You can book a range of services from airfares, travel insurance, car rentals, through to accommodation and cruises.
  • You have the security of booking with a ‘bonded’ travel agent
  • You have a travel agent working with you every step of the way in your personal travel journey

What are you waiting for?

Book your next travel adventure with Maxwell Burns at Champion Travel in Napier and experience the difference that forty-eight years in the travel industry brings to your journey.

An Enchanting Retreat: My Serene Escape to Bethells Beach Cottages

By Fiona Stephen, Senior Content Creator, Media PA
When I arrived at Bethells Beach Cottages, I immediately felt the weight of the world lift off my shoulders as I took in the wide-open view of the mighty west coast. The drive to the cottages was an experience in itself, winding through roads bordered by lush forests and offering stunning views of the valley below, gradually leading up to the breathtaking beach region. As we arrived, we were greeted by the wonderful Trude and John, hosts of Bethells Beach Cottages. Trude gave us a tour of the accommodation and insider insights into the area.

Te Koinga Cottage was a warm, cosy haven, with the comforting aroma of wood filling the air, creating a magical escape from the everyday hustle. One of the most tranquil moments was sitting by the fire with a glass of wine, the crackling flames and rich wood scent providing pure relaxation. The cottage’s character shone through in every detail, from the charming stained glass to the terracotta-tiled floor, creating a rustic yet luxurious feel. The double bi-folding doors leading to the deck were perfect for enjoying the fresh Tasman sea air, and the eco-friendly initiatives like recycling and composting made me appreciate the minimal impact of my stay.

Bethells Beach itself is a place of wonder, with its dramatic cliff faces and unique rock formations, including headlands at both ends of the beach that resemble a man’s head. These natural wonders stand tall and proud, framing the beach and adding a sense of awe to every visit. The beach was alive with the sounds of birds and the laughter of people enjoying the natural beauty of the area, with the waves gently crashing against the shore. Breathing in the calming and wellness of the Tasman sea salt air was a refreshing and rejuvenating experience.

The Scandinavian hot tub, shared with other guests, was a delightful way to unwind, and the wood-fired BBQ adds an extra layer of rustic charm to our meals. A gas-fired BBQ was also available, offering convenience and choice. For those seeking even more adventure, summer swimming at nearby Lake Wainamu, O’Neills Beach, and Bethells Beach provided refreshing escapes.

In the morning, I awoke to the chorus of birds singing outside the cottage, a gentle reminder of the untouched beauty surrounding me. In the afternoon, we ventured into Swanson for lunch, and the experience did not disappoint. The drive was scenic and enjoyable, and the food was top quality—a delightful mix of flavours that added to the overall sense of relaxation and enjoyment.

Weekday stays here will be perfect for quiet reflection, allowing one to disconnect and truly recharge in paradise. Every detail about this beautiful location was thoughtfully considered, making my time at Bethells Beach Cottages not just a getaway, but a truly memorable experience.

Location:

  • 30 minutes from Westgate
  • 22mins from Café Redwoods
  • 2mins Bethells Beach Surf Life Saving Club/Bethells Beach

Style: Boutique and artistic, rustic charm with characterful touches

Perfect for: Peaceful retreat and escape from the busy city. Ideal for unwinding and reconnecting with nature. Weekday stays will be perfect for reflection and create a clear headspace for working.

First Impressions: As soon as you arrive at Bethells Beach Cottages, the view takes your breath away. The exterior of the cottages each have their own unique character, with coloured wood panels and stained glass features. The blend of natural beauty outside and artistic details made a strong first impression, promising a stay that would be both serene and memorable. And Trude and John as hosts made me feel very welcome and have good knowledge of the area, taking all the guesswork out of what to do during the stay.

Poem:

Frosty mornings greet the day,

Frozen troughs in icy sway.

Shaggy horses in the field,

To the big meadow hay bales they yield.

Icicles from manes hang low,

In winter’s hush, they softly glow.

A fire roars in the hearth’s embrace,

Warmth spreads through the quiet place.

The thrill of snow, a fresh, white sheet,

On 4x4s, we dance, snow at our feet.

Stuck in the drifts, laughter rings clear,

Snow angels form, and joy draws near.

Hand warmers on, we feel the heat,

Wrapped up warm, adventure’s sweet.

The High Country Pub, a welcomed break,

With mulled wine, we pause, hearts awake.

The snowy trails, a wonderland,

Guided by nature’s gentle hand.

Horses trot, a steady pace,

Through winter’s art, a silent grace.

On 4x4s, we roar through the snow,

In Cardrona’s spell, we’re free to flow.

Winter’s touch, a fleeting kiss,

A moment in time, pure, cold bliss.

So, come with us, in winter’s chill,

To a place where nature’s breath stands still.

At The Cardrona, the world’s anew,

Where frost and snow create a view.

An adventure in the season’s glow,

A memory in the soft white snow.

Best Western Newmarket Inn & Suites in Auckland Ticks All The Right Boxes

Recently, I stayed at Best Western Newmarket Inn & Suites and was beyond impressed with the entire experience. My room was located in their brand new building and I found it to be both spacious and well-equipped with a plush King-sized bed, kitchenette, workspace, complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi and all of the essentials that you need for a first class stay.

A highlight for me was the buffet breakfast, which includes both cooked and continental options all for just $20 per person ($15 for children under the age of 12). The waffles and fresh fruit were divine and the complimentary coffee-to-go started my day off just right.

For both the business and leisure traveller, Best Western Newmarket Inn & Suites is hard to beat when it comes to location. It is just a short drive from Auckland’s city centre, 13km from Auckland Airport and a brief 10-minute walk to the Newmarket shopping district. For the event and concert goer, ASB Showgrounds, Spark Arena and Eden Park are close by and for those visiting family in Greenlane Hospital, it is a mere 2.5km away. Other nearby hot spots include One Tree Hill, Stardome Observatory and The University of Auckland.

A rarity with Auckland accommodation these days is parking that is onsite and free of charge. Best Western Newmarket Inn & Suites provides both of the aforementioned, with parking that is also easy to access and convenient to your room. Such a nice change from the pricey, offsite and/or difficult parking that you typically find in the Auckland city centre.

Last but not least are the onsite meeting facilities, which really stand out. Their conference room features a professional and contemporary style with plenty of seating, tables and a presentation screen. There is also the option to open up the doors to an outdoor area with more seating, tables and a gorgeous garden theme.

Overall, Best Western New Market Inn & Suites ticks all the right boxes and I will definitely book in with them again. Thank you to Andy, Amy and the team for an incredible stay.

Rave Reviews from Delighted Guests

fishbit69 from Auckland:

“We booked for a few nights to get away and experience some peace and tranquillity without the long drive. Bethells Beach can be a bit gnarly and wild in the winter… just what the doctor ordered! Our hosts Trudy and John have put a lot of time and energy into their property, ensuring guests have a truly magnificent experience. Cottages are quirky and quaint, and complete with outdoor fire. We enjoyed lovely walks on the beach, open fires at our cottage, and stargazing in the hot tub at night. The only disappointment was we had to come back to Auckland city. We’ll be back for sure!”

Steve from New Zealand:

“This is an incredible place to relax and unwind. A beautiful location with stunning views overlooking the beach. The little cottage was warm and cosy with the sun streaming in throughout the day. Cooking on the outdoor BBQ as the sun sets over the ocean below was magic, and soaking in the hot tub under the stars before bed made for extra deep sleeping. A great stay.”

Debbie F. from Auckland:

“We returned to this magical spot where we got married 20 years ago, and it was just as special as we remember! We enjoyed our time relaxing in the comfortable hammock overlooking one of the best views in the country and soaking in our private kiwi hot tub on our patio while we watched the sun set! The Turehu cottage has a unique character and rustic charm. The bed is extremely comfortable, and we loved the quality of the linen and towels. Thank you, Trudy and John!”

New NDC Research Findings Exciting for Maxwell Burns Owner of IATA Accredited Travel Agency Champion Travel in the Hawke’s Bay

New Distribution Capability (NDC) has become a significant topic in the travel industry, raising questions about its impact on the consumer experience. Recent research offers exciting insights, and Champion Travel, led by Maxwell Burns in Hawke’s Bay, is eager to pass on these benefits to its clients.

NDC, introduced by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), aims to modernise how airline products are retailed. By allowing airlines to offer more personalised and dynamic content, NDC provides travellers with a broader range of choices and tailored offers. However, new research from Travelport suggests that the impact on consumers might not be entirely positive. The research indicates that 58% of travellers are now struggling to compare all the new products and additional offers available through NDC.

In the midst of this complex landscape, Maxwell Burns of Champion Travel stands out as a beacon of clarity. With years of experience in the travel industry, Maxwell leverages NDC to its full potential while expertly navigating its complexities. His deep understanding of the market ensures that clients receive the best deals available, tailored to their specific needs and preferences.

Travelport’s State of Modern Retailing report highlights several key findings:

– The real impact NDC is having on travel shoppers.

– How a 1900% increase in travel products is overwhelming consumers.

– Strategies to balance agency and supplier direct selling.

– Real examples of how travel companies are responding to the direct-to-consumer (DTC) model.

There has been a global movement to cut out the middleman recently, with the DTC model now promising significant benefits in travel. However, travellers don’t see it that way, according to Travelport’s new research. Great travel experiences make the industry stronger and more profitable for suppliers and agencies. The insights from the report can help deliver the best experiences for customers.

At Champion Travel, Maxwell Burns utilises these insights to help clients make sense of the overwhelming array of choices. By balancing agency and supplier direct selling, he ensures that clients benefit from both the personalised offers of NDC and the comprehensive service of traditional travel agencies.

In conclusion, while NDC is transforming the travel industry, it also presents challenges.
