Roni Albert to Headline NZ Business Connect Social Giving Event on May 5 2026, Supporting Waikato Women’s Refuge

Ruahine ‘Roni’ Albert will take centre stage as keynote speaker at NZ Business Connect’s upcoming Social Giving Event on Tuesday, May 5, shining a light on the realities of family violence in the Waikato and the growing demand for support. The event, which will raise funds for Waikato Women’s Refuge – Te Whakaruruhau, brings the business community together in support of one of the region’s most vital frontline services. For nearly 40 years, Women’s Refuge Waikato has provided a lifeline for those escaping family violence. The foundation of Te Whakaruruhau was a collective effort led by many local women, including Hinewirangi Kohu, Roma Balzer, Ariana Simpson, and Ruahine ‘Roni’ Albert. Today, that legacy continues through Roni’s ongoing leadership, helping shape and strengthen the largest refuge in the country. Since opening in 1986, the organisation has supported more than 150,000 women and children, with up to 5,000 people seeking help each year. Yet, as Roni explains, the reality behind those numbers is often misunderstood. “People think the Police will come, make an arrest, and everything will be fine,” she says. “But that’s not always the case.” Much of the harm women experience is not just physical, but psychological. Patterns of control, degradation, and manipulation can slowly erode confidence and independence, creating invisible barriers that make leaving incredibly difficult. “Over time, they start to believe what they’re being told about themselves,” Roni says. Demand for support across the Waikato is rising, driven by the cost of living and a lack of accessible housing. Women and children are staying longer in safe houses, often with nowhere permanent to go. For many, even basic necessities are out of reach. “Some of these families are choosing between feeding their children or themselves,” she says. Despite the scale of need, Women’s Refuge’s work is not fully funded, relying heavily on community and business support to provide essential services such as food, legal assistance, and safe housing. At the upcoming NZBC Social Giving Event, Roni hopes to shift perspectives and inspire action. “There is so much harm in our community that people will never see,” she says. “If you see something, do something. That one action could change a life.” With the event just around the corner, her message is simple: consistent, collective support can make a real difference. Hillcrest Spinal, Hamilton: A Waikato Legacy Built on Generations of Care

Since opening its doors in 1971, Hillcrest Spinal has remained a constant in the Waikato health landscape. Founded by Dr Allen Elley, the clinic was among the first chiropractic practices in the region, setting an early benchmark for hands-on, patient-focused care. At a time when chiropractic treatment was still gaining recognition locally, Dr Elley established a practice grounded in results. His approach was simple and practical. Understand the cause of pain, restore movement, and help patients return to normal life as quickly as possible. That foundation shaped not only the clinic’s early success, but its long-term reputation across generations of patients. Over the decades, Hillcrest Spinal has been carefully passed on, each owner building on what came before while preserving the core philosophy. Today, the clinic is led by Dr Sarkaw Randhawa, who became the third owner in 2016. The transition between the original founder and current leadership is part of what makes the clinic’s story distinctive. Dr Elley continued practising alongside Dr Randhawa until his retirement just before turning 80, ensuring continuity of care and a seamless handover of knowledge and experience. Under Dr Randhawa, Hillcrest Spinal has evolved while staying true to its roots. The clinic continues to focus on diagnosing and treating spinal conditions such as back pain, neck pain, headaches, and postural issues, with an emphasis on restoring movement and preventing recurrence. What remains unchanged is the philosophy behind the care. Treatment is designed to be effective, efficient, and grounded in evidence. Patients are not just treated, but educated, with a strong focus on helping them understand their condition and take control of their long-term health. More than 50 years on, Hillcrest Spinal stands as more than a clinic. It represents continuity in a fast-changing healthcare environment. A place where experience is passed down, not lost. Where modern methods are built on proven foundations. From Dr Allen Elley’s original vision to Dr Sarkaw Randhawa’s ongoing leadership, Hillcrest Spinal continues to do what it has always done. Deliver care that works. Contact Hillcrest Spinal: Phone 07 856 6442 info@hillcrestspinal.co.nz 021 100 7363 Neck or back pain? Contact MediaPA 027 458 7724 phillip@mediapa.co.nz

Greenhorn NZ and Mango Blast: A Conversation with Co-Founder Ravinder Singh

Below, Co-Founder Ravinder Singh of Greenhorn NZ shares insights into his background, the journey behind the brand, and the inspiration for Mango Blast. 1. Can you tell us a little about your background and how you got started in the beverage industry? “I hold an MBA in Marketing and have over 20 years of experience in the retail sector. My career has been deeply integrated with the beverage industry, where I gained extensive experience launching major brands such as Johnnie Walker. This background taught me how to adapt quickly to evolving consumer tastes and preferences, ultimately inspiring my dream to globalise Greenhorn and share it with the world.” 2. What inspired you to create Greenhorn NZ and, specifically, Mango Blast? “Like any passionate business owner, my goal with Greenhorn NZ is to grow the market by offering something people already love. Mango Blast was inspired by the global popularity of mango, it’s a flavour that appeals to almost everyone and has strong potential in New Zealand. I saw a gap in the market, as this kind of product isn’t widely available here, especially using natural, organic fruit instead of concentrates. So the idea was to meet that demand, give consumers more variety, and introduce a fresh, high-quality option to the market.” 3. Were there any early challenges you had to overcome when starting the brand? “Like any startup, we faced a number of early challenges, taking risks always comes with uncertainty. One of the biggest was adapting to the New Zealand palate and making sure our flavours matched local consumer preferences. At the same time, we were trying to diversify our product range while entering a highly competitive market. Growing a business from a small base is never easy, especially with fast-changing demand and the need to keep up with trends and algorithms that influence visibility. We had to stay flexible, constantly adapt to consumer tastes, and respond quickly to what the market was asking for.” 4. How do you ensure Greenhorn products are suited to the Kiwi palate? “We make sure our products are suited to the Kiwi palate by focusing entirely on local preferences. Everything is developed specifically for New Zealand tastes through continuous questioning, research, and extensive sampling. We’ve gathered feedback from over 25,000+ people, which helps us refine our products and ensure they truly match what Kiwi consumers enjoy.” 5. What makes Mango Blast different from other drinks on the market? “What makes Mango Blast different is its natural benefits and authentic flavour. It’s rich in antioxidants and vitamins like C and A, which support skin health and digestion. Unlike many drinks, it’s not seasonal, you can enjoy it anytime. Most importantly, it delivers a real, natural fruit flavour experience, which is hard to find in many drinks in New Zealand, and that’s what truly makes Mango Blast stand out.” 6. What values or principles guide your approach to creating new products? “Our approach to creating new products is guided by a strong commitment to quality and delivering a premium experience. At Greenhorn, we never compromise on the standard of our ingredients, everything we use is carefully selected to ensure it meets high-quality benchmarks. Beyond that, we focus on authenticity, using natural ingredients to create genuine flavours, and putting the consumer first by continuously listening to feedback. Innovation is also key, we aim to bring something fresh and unique to the market while staying consistent and reliable. Overall, our goal is to create products that not only taste great but offer a memorable, high-quality experience every time.” 7. What health benefits can consumers expect from Mango Blast? “Consumers can expect several natural health benefits from Mango Blast. It’s rich in antioxidants and vitamins like C and A, which help support skin health and give a natural glow. It also aids digestion, thanks to the natural properties of mango. Overall, it’s a refreshing drink that not only tastes great but also offers added nutritional value from real fruit.” 8. Why did you decide to focus on natural ingredients and no concentrates? “We chose to focus on natural ingredients and avoid concentrates because they align with our values of quality and premiumness. Concentrates don’t offer the same health benefits or authentic taste, and we believe in providing the best possible product. Using real, natural ingredients allows consumers to experience true fruit flavours while also delivering better value to New Zealand customers. It’s about offering a product that reflects our commitment to both quality and a superior, more natural experience.” 9. Where do you see Greenhorn in the next five years? “In the next five years, we see Greenhorn growing beyond New Zealand and expanding into global markets. Our goal is to build a strong international presence and work towards becoming a leading, number one brand in the beverage industry. Along the way, we aim to broaden our product range, continue innovating with high-quality, natural ingredients, and strengthen our brand identity. We also want to build strong partnerships, scale our production, and stay closely connected to consumer needs, so we can keep delivering premium products while growing sustainably.” 10. How do you hope Mango Blast impacts the lives of those who drink it? “We hope Mango Blast inspires people to choose higher-quality, organic drinks that are genuinely good for them. By offering a delicious, natural alternative, we want to help shift consumer preferences toward healthier options. Beyond taste, Mango Blast provides antioxidants and vitamins C and A, supporting skin health and digestion, so it’s not just enjoyable, it contributes to overall well-being. Ultimately, we want our drink to be recognised as a premium, beneficial product that people can feel good about choosing.” 11. Are there any upcoming initiatives, events, or launches you’re particularly excited about? “We’re really excited about the initiatives and events we’ve been part of. We recently participated in CreatorCon and The Food Show, which generated strong engagement and gave people a chance to sample Mango Blast, helping build early awareness and positive feedback, especially among

Foliar Fertiliser: Your Questions Answered by New Zealand Soil Scientist Dr Gordon Rajendram

Q: Why is liquid foliar fertiliser especially important as we head into colder months? As soil temperatures drop, pasture growth slows. At around 5 to 6 degrees, grass can stop growing. The primary reason is reduced microbial activity. In warmer conditions, soil microbes convert nutrients into plant-available forms. In the cold, this slows significantly. Foliar fertiliser works differently. It delivers nutrients directly into the plant through the leaf, bypassing the soil. When applied, nutrients can enter the plant and roots within an hour, keeping growth systems active when soils are not. Q: How does foliar feeding work? Foliar fertiliser is applied to the leaf and absorbed directly into plant tissue. This allows rapid uptake and immediate use and growth. Farmers understand this. Herbicides such as Roundup are applied as foliar sprays to kill weeds quickly, the same principle applies here. Just as it’s possible to get herbicide into a plant rapidly using foliar to kill and eradicate plants quickly, you can just as effectively deliver nutrition for plant growth. Foliar is a more efficient pathway, especially in challenging conditions. Q: What have trials shown about its effectiveness? Trials in New Zealand, including Canterbury, show clear increases in pasture growth when foliar fertiliser is used in cooler conditions. International research supports this finding. Studies show yield increases of 15 to 19 percent under stress conditions, particularly when soil performance is limited. This has been demonstrated in the field with farmers seeing a response within days and maximised within 3 to 4 weeks. In addition, foliar application is more uniform and provides nutrition to plants evenly. Q: How does New Zealand’s foliar fertiliser use compare internationally? Overseas, foliar fertiliser is no longer niche. It is standard practice across many farming systems, from broadacre crops like wheat and maize to intensive production. In high-performing systems, multiple foliar applications are used through the season to maximise results. In comparison, New Zealand systems still rely heavily on soil-applied fertiliser, often around 70 kilograms of urea (36 kg N) per hectare in a single application, with less focus on foliar strategies. Q: Why is foliar more widely adopted overseas? The main driver is nutrient use efficiency (NUE). Overseas farmers focus on maximising return from every unit of nutrient. Foliar fertiliser allows faster response to plant demand, quicker correction of deficiencies, and better performance when soil conditions are limiting. In many cases, farmers use half to a quarter of the usual fertiliser and still achieve the same response. Q: Is foliar fertiliser a replacement for traditional fertiliser? No. The most effective systems use both. Soil fertiliser builds soil foundation, while foliar fertiliser fine-tunes performance by filling in the gaps. It is about using the right tool at the right time. Q: What is the key takeaway for farmers? As soils cool and biology slows, relying on soil fertiliser alone limits potential. Foliar fertiliser provides a direct line into the plant when other conditions are not favourable. Consequently, for growth maintenance and improved efficiency, foliar feeding can be a game-changer. JSR Refrigeration and Air Conditioning’s Guide to Using Your Heat Pump Efficiently in Cold Weather

When temperatures drop, your heat pump can still be one of the most efficient ways to heat your home, but only if it’s used correctly. JSR Refrigeration and Air Conditioning recommends a few simple adjustments to make a noticeable difference in comfort, performance, and power bills. 1. Set and forget your temperatureAvoid constantly turning your heat pump on and off. Instead, set it to a steady, comfortable temperature (typically around 18–21°C). Heat pumps work best when maintaining a consistent environment rather than reheating a cold space from scratch. 2. Use Heat Mode, not AutoIn colder weather, always switch to heat mode. Auto mode can cause the system to switch between heating and cooling, which wastes energy and reduces efficiency. 3. Don’t crank it to the maxSetting your heat pump to 30°C won’t heat your room faster. It simply makes the unit work harder for longer, increasing energy use. Stick to a realistic temperature and let the system do its job. 4. Keep doors and windows closedHeat escapes quickly in winter, so keep the space sealed to maintain warmth and reduce workload on the unit. 5. Clean your filters regularlyDirty filters restrict airflow and force your heat pump to work harder. A quick clean every few weeks during heavy use can improve performance and air quality. 6. Make use of timers and schedulingPre-warm your home before you wake up or return in the evening. This keeps your space comfortable without running the system unnecessarily all day. 7. Ensure good airflowKeep furniture, curtains, and other obstructions away from the indoor unit so heat can circulate evenly. 8. Don’t worry about defrost cyclesOn very cold mornings, your outdoor unit may briefly stop heating while it defrosts. This is normal and helps maintain efficiency. 9. Insulation mattersEven the best heat pump struggles in a poorly insulated home. Sealing drafts and improving insulation can significantly boost performance. Used properly, a heat pump remains one of the most cost-effective heating options through winter. Following these tips from JSR Refrigeration and Air Conditioning can keep your home warmer, drier, and more energy-efficient all season long. Hamilton Real Estate Salesperson, Gurinder Singh: Results Over Commission, and Why the Right Agent Changes Everything

Are you after someone who cares more about commission or a successful sale? Don’t settle for someone chasing commission. Choose someone chasing results. In real estate, that difference is not just a tagline. It shows up in every decision, every conversation, and ultimately, in the final outcome. For Gurinder Singh, a real estate salesperson at LM Realty, a results-driven approach starts well before a property ever hits the market. It begins with understanding the seller’s true goals. Not just a price, but timing, conditions, and the kind of buyer that will deliver the smoothest transaction. From there, the strategy is tailored, not templated. No one size fits all campaigns, no shortcuts. A commission focused agent may push for a quick sale. Get it listed fast, get an offer on the table, and move on. A results focused agent takes a different path. They look at how to position the property to create competition. That might mean investing more time in presentation, stronger marketing, or choosing the right method of sale to maximise buyer interest. In practice, this can look like honest conversations that are not always the easiest to have. It might mean advising a client to wait rather than rush. It could mean recommending small improvements that make a big difference in perceived value. It also means strong negotiation, not just accepting the first offer, but working every angle to achieve the best possible outcome. It also goes beyond the transaction itself. Gurinder is committed to making every sale count in a bigger way. Upon a successful sale, he will donate $1,000 to $2,000 to a charity of the seller’s choice. It is a simple but powerful way to turn a property sale into something that gives back to the community. Communication is another key part of the difference. Sellers are kept informed at every stage, with clear insights into buyer feedback, market response, and next steps. There is no guesswork, no silence, and no pressure to accept something that does not feel right. At the end of the day, commission is a byproduct. Results are the priority. Because when the focus is on achieving the right outcome, not just any outcome, clients do not just sell their property. They move forward with confidence, knowing they made the right call from the very beginning.
